雨の日の暁け方はうすら寒い、洗面の御湯をもって来て呉れるナースの手を取って、ラ・ボヘーメのロドルフォのように、

Che gerida manina,

Al buio non si trova.

と歌うことさえあった。私達は甦えって新しい生活に入る前に、夢ともつかず、現ともつかぬ静かな日を送っていたものと見える。近藤君は、ある日のこと、卓上の紙にこう記した。

“These days of ours here are glad days of nonsense unredeemed, of unbroken idleness and contentment, of dreaming wanderings from mountains to mountains and from friends to friends. All that was serious in life we had left behind.”

実際病院生活を煎じつめれば、この日記の外には何ごとも残らなかった。
